Recreation and Touring
b It’s that time of year when people are talking about what they’re doing for their summer vacation. Some folk are heading all the way to England for the Olympics. Nearer to home on Sequim’s doorstep is a place that couldn’t be further from all that hustle bustle, sweat and competition. A ‘staycation’ this summer in the Olympic National Park is a wonderful opportunity to take in what the local area has to offer. It is a World Heritage Site for good reason. You don’t need to jump through hoops to get there either. Using the colours of the hoops of the Olympic logo, the following takes a look at five reasons the park is the perfect location for your summer vacation: Blue The Blue Glacier is 2.6-mile long glacier and descends from the highest peak in the Olympic Mountains - Mount Olympus. It is one of more than 250 glaciers and permanent ice fields in the park and one of the largest. Apparently, it is the equivalent of 20 trillion ice cubes! The Blue Glacier can be seen by taking the Hoh River Trail, which rewards you at the end of the 17.4 mile hike with views. Yellow Yellow Banks is a point along the part of the dramatic North Coast Route that is truly considered wilderness lined with crashing seas. A combination of careful planning, hiking and mindful camping are essential to enjoy the setting and not harm it. If manoeuvring over slippery rocks, fallen trees and beach logs is not your thing, then there is an easier yellow to enjoy look out for… Banana Slugs can be seen in park forests and are easy to spot. The ‘banana’ link is not because they are a culinary delicacy but because of their appearance; they are yellow and often have brown spots. They graze on vegetation, droppings and other organic goodies on the forest floor, turning it into soil humus. This explains their important role in the ecosystem and grants them another special title - detritivore. Black Black bears can be spotted by lucky visitors to the park. The black bear is the most common bear in the US and is about as tall as we are. Bears like to eat anything, from a more staple diet of bark, tree sapwood and berries to insects, fish and mammals. The fact that they will eat most things is why the park calls for all food to be secured and in some cases stored in bear canisters and hung on the bear wires they provide. Encounters with a bear attracted to the scent of your food – or you’re your toothpaste - can lead to displays of aggressive behaviour by the bear and usually leads to loss or damage of property. Green Giant green anemones can be spotted in the tidepools along some of the park’s coast. Their green tentacles are why they are considered among the most beautiful of anemones, though when the tide recedes they draw them in and are rather less attractive. Not flora but fauna these animals are often solitary but can be found in groups. They eat various sea creatures and their bodies provide a habitat for algae, which in turn provide them with nourishment and oxygen in a cosy relationship. If you are viewing them, the park calls for tidepool etiquette to protect them and their habitat. Red Red stands for the many things that you can’t do in the park: the fact that you have to be careful about how you eat your food, where you gather firewood and all the other rules that ensure you do not leave a trace. This is what helps ensure that your visit to the park is a trip away from the norm. You are not going to see the usual line-up of ugly superstores, with trucks driving around the park to make a pallet delivery of every kind of cereal or cookie imaginable. Instead the park is home to a sensible amount of stores dotted around, like the picturesque Fairholm General Store with its café and marina that overlook Lake Crescent. This mustn’t be seen as a negative, rather
it reminds us of the many people dedicated to conservation and the
environment who are looking after the landscape and its flora and fauna
and ensuring that people, who have done plenty of damage in the past, do
not continue to do so. It is this same spirit that has led to the
removal of the Elwha Dam and has begun the removal of the Glines Dam. As
a consequence, the many salmon that once travelled these rivers may well
return. Join them. ____________________________________ Highway 112. | Lost Mountain Winery - Lost Mountain features "...hand-crafted and robust wines produced in limited bottling with grapes from some of the finest vineyards of Washington's Columbia Valley, and California's Lodi-Woodbridge area." They advertise DAGO RED wine. I don't like this, but give their wines a try. -tp. -Area gas stations gasoline service

Circle and Square Domestic and Import Auto Care
is in Port Hadlock, I occasionally point to a business that is
exemplary. Circle and Square is such a place. They are an AAA Approved
Repair facility, but what sets them apart is that they are a "green"
business. They recycle their wash water, they use waste oil to heat the
shop, and they are environmentally conscious. Map:
