Give something back.  To a certain degree, the World Wide Web is a public place where everybody maintains everybody else's documents. If you enjoyed reading a paper, and you see a typo, a link that points nowhere, a mark-up error - don't be polite and silent; tell the maintainer about it. In almost all cases, they will be happy to receive feedback, and grateful for the work you've saved them. Last update April 1998, Jutta Degener, < jutta@cs.tu-berlin.de

Seeking Soft Skills- John Radko, chief architect at Gaithersburg, Md.-based Global Exchange Services Inc. (GXS), said he sees the kind of testing services offered by TopCoder and Brainbench as "a great concept." However, Radko added that he doesn't think GXS, which operates a business-to-business e-commerce network, would make use of the services for hiring developers at its facility in Bangalore. "We have less difficulty finding people that program well and more difficulty with [hiring] people that can work on geographically distributed, cross-functional teams," Radko said, citing functions such as marketing, engineering and customer service. As a result, it's the latter qualities "and other softer skills that we tend to make hiring decisions on," he noted.

Videoconferencing Gets IP Boost
As corporations upgrade network infrastructures to support IP telephony and voice-over-IP applications, integrated IP videoconferencing may be the next logical step.

[EDITORIAL]  Faster Net connections puts pressure on retailers;  Full story at:

How does the ability to connect faster-- and at any time-- influence buying habits of those using the Internet?

Another aspect that we should consider is that now that more and more folks are connected to broadband (or plan to get connected)..and their willingness to pay for faster connections is the expectation of more (and different) content and services.

What are the implications here?  What kind of content will they want?  Can we anticipate this, or do we settle for what has already been suggested...i.e., streaming video, video on demand, CD quality audio, increased teleworking, more narrow/unicasting, increased use of "push" technology or access to programs and applications that are web (client) based, increased file downloads, gaming, increased customization, more content-rich services, etc.

What broadband surfers would pay for
37% music
33% video
14% gaming
13% enhanced e-mail
Stats from Jupiter Media
How can we, as tech workers, designers, writers and programmers in the forefront take best advantage of this?  What services, software, etc. might help retailers leverage the growth of broadband use in the customer base?

From KONP News and the Peninsula Daily News, Port Angeles:: (Carlsborg - West of Sequim) -- A cutting edge wireless video network and school security system, believed to be the first of its kind in the nation will be tested at Graywolf Elementary in Carlsborg this week. Joe Martin says the unique security system is being developed by Cisco Systems, Loronix Video Solutions, the Clallam County PUD, local school districts and the sheriff's office. Martin says the exercise will also feature use of the Clallam Response System, which is an Internet based program that provides emergency responders with critical information about the school, including stored digital images of the entire building. Only Greywolf has video cameras that can provide live feeds over a wireless transmission system that can be picked up by computers within a 2-mile radius of the school at 171 Carlsborg Road. Martin said the signal from the school is transmitted on a very narrow secure band. The system doesn't use the Internet. The only glitch is yesterday's exercise was a balky HP,  iPaq PDA.

New ISP in area:  $8.95 per month paid Annually or $10.95 per month paid Monthly http://www.3dnorth.com/ Has P.A. dial-up numbers.

Fiber Optics in Sequim: The test my friend did on another fiber install in Sequim, gave him a 4.3Mbps download speed.  He didn't check upload speed, but guessed it would have been even faster. The best effort* speed advertised is 7Mbps (Olympus.Net) His own, newly installed system, uses Olympus.Net as his ISP. http://www.olympus.net/olympusnet/services/PUDpilot.html   - for  80$/month, with a one time fee of 120$.  This should last through the pilot project window which I understand is through the end of this year.  The service is on a month to month basis, with no contract required. *  The "best effort" phrase is often used to describe service speed.  What I think this means is that the provider does NOT offer any throughput guarantees, but will always do their best to provide you with the fastest connection your specific conditions will allow. The fiber access panel (from World Wide Packets draws power from meter box. “Callam PUD is committing to 1 Mbps for the residential market, but (for now at least) are deploying wide-open ports, which achieve speeds beyond the 5 Mbps rate (both upload and download) on DSL Reports.   The ports are deployed via Gigabit Ethernet on the fiber, which is delivered to the customer via a fiber gateway that delivers multiple 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet ports to the home or SOHO business in the Sequim pilot area.  Only one of the ports will be activated initially in most cases.  The PUD is reserving future port capacity for applications like AMR (Automated Meter Reading) and load management.” (From a PUD  Sales Engineer.)  One of the owners at Tenforward writes in his 7 April email:  “We are trying to get a map and some more info before creating a web page. The cost is $80 per month.” A representative from Olypen called (7 April) to say that they ironed out some things with PUD and they, too, will be offering fiber connectivity.

At Tata Steel, one incident more than
any other drove home the point that
they had to find a way to combining
intellectual and technological assets
via knowledge management. In 1999, a
foreign technical consultant was
summoned to the Indian steel giant to
solve a problem. He replied that he had
already been engaged and solved it the
year before.

Mr. Dean Kamen <http://www.dekaresearch.com/aboutDean.html>  is father of the Segway Transporter as well as a portable dialysis unit, iBot wheelchair system, etc.  He takes his projects to clients and says, "This is our idea, and this is the goal we think we can get to.  Do you want to pre-agree with us that if we can meet this goal, you'll take it?"  An enviable position, from a proven designer, but a model that could be used in some cases where a service or non-tangible is involved.

students cluster, their thoughts tumble
out, enlarging their word bank for
writing and often enabling them to see
